Title: Lego Rock Band

Platform: 360 (Also PS3, Wii)

ESRB Rating: E10+

Publishers: Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, MTV Games

Developers: Harmonix, Traveller’s Tales

Rating: ★★★★☆

Review by: Bill Jones

It’s easy to see the title of Lego Rock Band and think, “Wow, there are two things – a license (Lego) and genre (rhythm) – that are already oversaturated in the video game market. Why would anyone combine them?”

As far as Rock Band goes, it seems almost an unnecessary addition to the franchise, while for Lego it is a departure from the usual action-adventure gameplay associated with the brand. So, is Lego Rock Band an unnecessary combination of two properties? Probably. Is it still a hell of a lot of fun? Undeniably so. (more…)

Product: Hellboy – Painted Statue

Company: Mindzeye Studios

MSRP: $250 ($265 in Cold-Cast Bronze)

File this gift idea under, “For the Hellboy fan who seemingly has it all.”

We saw one of these bad boys at Comic-Con International in San Diego – well, a limited, exclusive variant of one – and just had to get our hands on it. Standing at 14.75 inches and weighing in at 5.25 pounds, it’s a towering piece of art perfect for the mantle of the hardcore fan of Mike Mignola’s most notable creation, Hellboy.

Mindzeye Studios, which previously created statues with the Hybrid license, not only acquired the license to Mignola’s creation to sculpt a statue in the image of its title character, but collaborated with the writer/artist on its design, and the result is absolutely fantastic. It is inspired specifically by the story “The Third Wish,” and roughly half of the statue’s height consists of a rock pedestal atop of which Hellboy stands. His demonic right fist is clenched, and in the other hand he’s carrying his unusually oversized revolver. (more…)

Title: Wet Moon: Where All Stars Fail to Burn (Vol. 5)

Publisher: Oni Press

Writer: Ross Campbell

Artist: Ross Campbell

Rating: ★★★☆☆

Review by: Thomas Braaksma

There are some evident obstacles that make themselves clear to the reader within the first pages of Wet Moon: Where All Stars Fail to Burn. First of all, it is the fifth installment of the series and definitely not a good starting point for new readers. Second, if the potential reader of this book is not a teenage or tween girl, there is a foreseeable chance they will not be impressed or interested, at all, in this book. (more…)

Title: Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony

Platform: 360

ESRB Rating: M

Publisher: Rockstar Games

Developer: Rockstar North

Review by: Dan Braun

Approximately one and a half years ago, Grand Theft Auto IV was released to almost universal praise amongst the gaming community. Despite this, some hardcore fans of the series felt that the game took itself too seriously and focused on the mundane and realistic, instead of showcasing the over-the-top (and often ridiculous) action and activities that have made the franchise so popular. For those who need the extreme, The Ballad of Gay Tony is a much lighter and more explosive foray into Liberty City that should have all GTA fanatics cheering for more. (more…)

Title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Platform: 360 (Also PS3, PC)

ESRB Rating: M

Publisher: Activision

Developer: Infinity Ward

Rating: ★★★★½

Review by: Bill Jones

Following up one of the most successful shooters of all time is no easy task. It’s made even more difficult when that shooter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, was not only a major monetary success, but also a critical gem that pushed the boundaries for single-player, first-person storytelling and featured near-perfect online multiplayer. Add it all together, along with the fact that it has been an incredible year for big-name games, and Infinity Ward had plenty of pressure going into the sequel to 2007’s “Game of the Year.”

But despite that pressure, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could be justly strapped with the banner, “Mission Accomplished.” Even if there are some minor indiscretions to be noted, Modern Warfare 2 does a successful job of remaining faithful to the formula for Infinity Ward’s success, while also making some small, but significant changes to add to the fun. Title: Dead Space Extraction

Platform: Wii

ESRB Rating: M

Publisher: Electronic Arts

Developer: Eurocom

Rating: ★★★★☆

Review by: John Gustafson

Last year’s horror title for the PS3 and 360, Dead Space, changed the way players and fans viewed the genre from then on. It reinvigorated the perception of what horror games could be with an inventive combat system and a truly scary experience that players had not fought through for quite some time. Dead Space Extraction may be a genre switch, but it does for rail shooters what the original did for horror.

Extraction smartly serves as a prequel to Dead Space, telling the tale of a mining colony extracting a mysterious artifact on Aegis VII, a small group’s escape to the planet-cracking ship Ishimura, and the terrors they fight once they arrive. Make no mistake about it – this is 100 percent Dead Space in tone, theme and style. (more…)

Like Rock Band? How about LEGO? Who doesn’t? Well, maybe John doesn’t, but the rest of us are convinced he’s not entirely human anyway. LEGO Rock Band combines both of those elements for great tunes like the Ghostbusters theme and “Final Countdown.” Our review of the game is coming later this week, but Warner was kind enough to send an additional Xbox 360 copy for a giveaway to one of our lucky readers. And all you need to do for chances to win is comment on stories this week, and you could be in possession of LEGO Rock Band just in time for the holidays. Use it as a gift or horde it for yourself; we don’t care.

Title: Left 4 Dead 2

Platform: 360 (Also PC)

ESRB Rating: M

Publisher: Valve Corporation

Developer: Valve Corporation

Rating: ★★★★½

Review by: Dan Braun

Last year, Valve unleashed its own vision of an undead invasion on the gaming community. The frenetic shooter, Left 4 Dead was welcomed as a bastion of cooperative multiplayer, and received a just amount of praise, despite issues regarding the depth of its campaign and its limited multiplayer maps.

Exactly one year later, its sequel has arrived, and although many gamers anticipated this would only serve as a simple expansion of the original, it is safe to say that Left 4 Dead 2 stands far and away as the superior title, and it is well worth the (full) price of admission to the zombie apocalypse. Undoubtedly, this is the game that should have come out last year, but its release is no less welcome for fans of the original or anyone else looking for an outstanding multiplayer experience.
